The judiciary is planning to establish a land court, the Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki has revealed.

Odoki said the land court will help to address the multitude of land problems around the country.

Odoki who has been on a monitoring and evaluation tour of court was addressing residents and local leaders in Mubende district at the Chief magistrates court on Monday afternoon.

He was responding to an appeal by leaders and residents raised concern over the pending land cases and civil cases on courts asking for his intervention.

“We are in (the process of) establishing a land court which will help to handle these issues so that Ugandans can get fair services. However, I want to see that all the pending land cases are investigated well so that we know their state. In the next two years, all of them must have been handled,” he said.

During the meeting Buwekula MP expressed concern over the increasing number of children being detained in prisons and cells in the area.

“We always have children being arrested, but police and prison wardens do not have anywhere to keep them. At times, they end up in same cells with adults which violates their rights,” Tonny Ssemuli said.

Odoki was accompanied by  Internal affairs state minister James Baba, the Director of public prosecution Richard Butera and other officials from the Judicial service commission and DANIDA.
