The deputy Inspectorate of Government (IGG), Raphael Baku, has left office after his contract expired on Friday.

Baku was first appointed in 2005 and his four-year contract was renewed in 2009. The law does allow him to serve a third term.

Baku said he is retiring a happy man after doing his best. “I was involved in prosecuting some officials from local government and created team work. I acquired property (land) for the Inspectorate of Government. I do not believe that Government should be renting. I created more regional offices from 13 to 16,” he said.

He denied allegations that some politicians used his office to fight political wars. He, however, lamented that the fight against corruption had been politicised.

“Politicising the work of the IGG has been very challenging. To fight corruption effectively, attempts of politicising the work of IGG should stop. When it is politicised, it undermines the effort of the staff to act diligently,” Baku said.

He plans to rest for a month before going into private legal practice. Asked whether he would take another government job he said, yes.

Baku said the office of the IGG is still under funded and more recruitment especially in investigation team is needed to effectively fight corruption.
