Yozefina Kirabira, who was abandoned by her husband with a sick child, now has a reason to smile.
Her two-year-old son, Sharif Mukisa, who had a brain condition, hydrocephalus, was finally operated upon at CURE Hospital in Mbale and can now eat by himself.
“Before the operation, Mukisa could not even stretch his arms or turn when he was lying down,” she said. Kirabira first appeared at New Vision offices last year, accusing her husband, Saidi Musolo, a fisherman at Galiraya landing site, of abandoning the family.
She said Musolo abandoned her with a five-year-old child, Mukisa and a pregnancy, yet she had no means of survival.
When her plight was published in Saturday Vision, readers came to her rescue.
Malaika Babies Home in Mengo took on looking after her seven-month-old baby, to enable Kirabira to take Mukisa to hospital.
Eddie and friends from the US contributed sh500,000, while staff of Barefoot Power Uganda, a solar services provider, contributed sh90,000.
Another reader, Monica Rukundo, contributed sh45,000. The hospital bill was sh750,000, leaving a deficit of sh265,000.
