Grief engulfed residents of Kyanakachwa village in Nakaseke district Thursady after their colleague was gored to death by his cow.

The Police in Nakaseke identified the dead man as Robert Kafeero, a 50-year-old peasant.

Central East Police spokesman Lameck Kigozi said Kafeero was killed at around 8:00am as he attempted to milk the cow.

“According to the deceased’s neighbours, the cow became wild after the death of his calf. Efforts by Kafeero to milk the cow proved futile since it threatened to gore anything that attempted to cross its way,” Kigozi narrated.

Eager to obtain milk, the deceased allegedly developed a ruse to make the irate cow believe that her calf was alive. He reportedly skinned the calf and used its hide to make a statue.

“From then on, he would milk the cow when it was still dark in a bid to conceal the identity of the statue from the cow. He would place the statue underneath the cow and milk it,” Kigozi narrated.

All this time, Kafeero succeeded in tricking the cow into believing that her calf was the one suckling her milk.

However, yesterday, the deceased reportedly woke up late to milk the cow at around 8:00am.

“When he started milking the cow, it turned to look at her calf only to see a statue, prompting it to go wild and kick the deceased with its hind legs repeatedly before trampling him to death,” Kigozi added.

Efforts of the neighbours to rescue Kafeero proved futile as they arrived at the scene when he had passed away.

The Police took Kafeero’s body to Nakaseke Hospital for post-mortem. The killer cow is in the custody of the Police as officers look for Kafeero’s heir to claim it.
