President Yoweri Museveni has said in order to improve service delivery and accelerate industrialisation in the country, the Government will increase the pay of scientists, judges and eventually other public servants like health workers, teachers and security personnel.

“Let us start with the scientists and the judges -so that our innovators and judges become comfortable. One group to push the economy and the other one to fairly administer justice,” the President said during the 27th anniversary celebrations of the NRM Government.

The main celebrations were held in Nyakasanga, Kasese district yesterday. The NRM captured Kampala on January 26, 1986.

Judges have of recent asked for audience with the President to discuss their salary, which they say are low. The Judicial Service Commission boss, Justice James Ogoola, said the money paid to judges was little compared to what they do.

“The Judicial Service Commission touched base with the Attorney General, justice minister, the budget and legal affairs committees of Parliament as well as the Chief Justice over the issue of the judges’ salaries,” he said.

“What we discussed has not yet been implemented,” Ogoola added. He said this during the 15th judges’ annual conference in Kampala last month. Ogoola said as a result of the low remuneration, there will be a time when they will advertise jobs and no competent lawyer shows interest.

“Today, if a good law firm is to handle a good case, it will talk of being paid in billions. How do you convince a lawyer to take up a job where they will get a salary of only sh5m?” he asked.
