A team of neurosurgeons from Uganda, Kenya and the US have carried out 13 successful delicate operations at Mbarara Hospital.
The 13, include cases of brain tumour, pineal gland Tumour, several back and spinal cord problems (radiculopathy). Tests were also done and handled on both adults and children.
The first ever neurosurgical camp at the hospital, was headed by Ugandan neurosurgeon Prof. David Kitya, together with a team of specialists led by Professor Bert Edward Park from the United States.
Prof. Bert has 36 years of experience and practices neurological surgery. Other surgeons included Dr. Ben Okanga from Kenya and other medical professionals from both Mbarara Hospital and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
Neurosurgery is the medical speciality concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with injury to, or diseases, disorders of the brain, spinal cord and spinal column and peripheral nerves within all parts of the body.
Dependent upon the nature of the injury or disease, a neurological surgeon may provide surgical and, or non-surgical care.
The team of visiting neurosurgeons expressed gratitude that they were able to offer their services free of charge and pledged to come to Mbarara twice a year.
