Property worth millions of shillings was reduced to ashes when the maternity ward at Luuka Main Hospital caught fire on Saturday. Expectant mothers run around in disarray when the fire started at around 8:00pm. None of them was injured.
The district health officer, Dr. Enock Kwikiriza, said the hospital has stopped admitting expectant mothers for lack of facilities.
Property like mama kits, labour beds, mattresses, drugs and other valuables were destroyed.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, but patients say it could have been caused by generator fuel, which is kept in one of the rooms next to the maternity ward.
