The family of Abel Kahara, a Kampala lawyer, is in shock over the loss of their four-year-old son, who was crushed to death by their gate as they watched on helplessly.
As Kahara narrated the events that led to the death of his son, Matthew Abaaho, during the requiem mass at St. Andrew’s Church in Bukoto, Kampala on Monday, some of the mourners could not hold back their tears.
Little Abaaho was crushed by the gate as he held it for his dad to drive in.
A grief-stricken Kahara narrated that his little boy died on the spot on Sunday morning after his head was smashed by the gate.
He had excitedly joined the security guard to open the gate for his dad, who was returning from a shopping trip in Ntinda.
“The gateman chose to let Abaaho complete the opening of the gate, which never happened. The gate was half-way open when Abaaho gave up. With a brutal force, the gate rolled back, crushing the boy’s head,” said the lawyer as tears rolled down his cheeks.
“I saw the gate hit my son. I saw the gateman trying to save his life. But it was in vain. I swiftly disembarked the car to give a helping hand, but it was already late. I saw him die and I couldn’t do anything,” he added.
Kahara described his departed four-year-old as the "most fun, sweetest and cheerful son I had ever had".
He narrated how the boy had successfully persevered many operations at Nakasero Hospital over breathing complications, only to die when he was not sick.
“Abaaho had just been operated on and we were all happy since his recovery was tremendous, but his death was a shock to us.
"It’s really painful,” Kahara sobbed.
