THE education ministry will on Monday next week release results for candidates who sat for their Primary Leaving Examinations late last year.

The minister of education Jessica Alupo and the national examinations board have already confirmed that the results will be released on Friday morning. The release of results in Kampala will only be open to the press.

Parents will be expected to pick results of their candidates from their respective schools; after results have been released.

With the release of results on Monday, it implies the national examinations board, will have managed to keep set schedule, of releasing results in time for the schools’ opening.

This implies that Senior One students start their first term on February 4. The selection of students to be admitted in Senior One is expected at the end of next week.

It is at the selection process that pupils are placed to various schools, on the basis of their performance and in regard to their applications they submitted before sitting for national examinations, later last year.  Private and public schools, all take part in the selections process.

Admissions are based on merit according to PLE results or equivalents and the original order of choices made by the candidate.

Computer selection of students for admission in senior one is up to 90% for boarding schools and 95% for day schools.

The rest of the percentage is administered by the chairman of the admission committee and in this case, it is the assistant commissioner (Secondary education) Francis Agula.

Under the selection criteria, a candidate who misses the first choice usually goes to the second choice schools depending on his or her score. Schools normally give priority to candidates who chose them as the first or second option.

In case a student fails to turn up 14 days after he or she had been admitted, a school may admit an eligible candidate to take over the vacant slot.

Each slot is expected to enroll 50% of each sex (Male and Female) to curb the gender disparity in the country’s education system.

Meanwhile, the release of Senior Four examinations results is expected to follow in a couple of weeks. However, the national examinations board and the ministry are yet to confirm this.
