About 500 students at the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management at Mulago referral Hospital in Kampala have reportedly been suspended for participating in last year’s strike over poor living conditions.

According to the guild speaker, Mulago Paramedical students, Elisa Kisamulusi revealed that the institute is interrogating all students in a bid to establish their connection to the strike.

He told the press on Tuesday morning that all the 200 students who took part in the November 19, 2012 strike and over 300 others who were present at the institute on that day have been suspended.

New Vision could not establish if the suspensions were indefinite by press time as the school’s official had not arrived at the premises.

Kisamulusi accused the institute‘s authorities of making a U-turn on a promise to improve their living conditions made late last year and instead suspend students.

The students had complained of being suffocated with some rooms in the halls of residence allegedly accommodating eight students as opposed to the recommended two.

They also accuse management of charging them sh90, 000 library fees yet there are not enough books in the library. Other grievances included poor hygiene and bad meals.
