Public universities have asked the Government for more financial support towards their libraries.

The support, they said, would help improve the quality of graduates.

The university administrators were meeting MPs on the education committee on Wednesday.

The Gulu University team said it spends a huge portion of the library fees they collect on hiring part-time librarians since there was a ban on their recruitment.

The MPs had summoned the university administrators over a wide range of issues.

Makerere University Secretary, David Muhwezi said the institution needed sh2.6b to effectively offer library services to students.

The committee vice-chairperson, Jacob Opolot queried why Kyambogo had not bought books over the last five years. In a meeting with education minister Jessica Alupo on Tuesday, MPs urged the Government to stop creating public universities until funding to the existing ones is improved.
