The ministry of education and sports has ordered the immediate closure of Kawempe Muslim School, following two mysterious fire outbreaks that razed two dormitories in a space of three weeks.
Fire gutted the boys’ dormitory on Wednesday evening, barely a week after another incident in which a girls’ dormitory was scorched, leading to loss of millions in students’ property.
The school has a population of over 1,700 students; 215 of these are in S.4 while S.6 students are 200.
The board of directors held an emergency meeting at the school on Thursday morning and met officials from the ministry of education and sports.
It was later resolved that the school be closed to all other students, except those who are doing their exams which started on Monday.
Earlier in the morning, parents camped at the school demanding that their children be handed over to them to avoid any more danger to their lives.
Three students are in Police detention over a fire that gutted a girls’ dormitory on Sunday evening.
Although the cause of the fires is yet to be established, preliminary investigations are pointing to a group of rowdy students suspended recently for organising a strike at the school.
