Students of Makerere University’s faculty of science, over the weekend, protested the poor sanitation in their toilets and drainage channels, besides the detoriorating state of the laboratory facilities.

The students also complained of a shortage of science lecturers and chemicals for experiments in the department.

“Our toilets and urinals have been locked for three years now. We are forced to go to the main library toilets. We also have few lecturers,” the guild minister in charge of private students, Geoffrey Mutagobwa said.

“The university has promised to release sh135m to the department to address the issues,” University Secretary Kahunda Muhwezi said.”

However, during a dialogue at the chemistry department on Friday, Muhwezi asked the department to write a requisition to the administration asking for computers, three lecturers and one assistant teaching staff.

He also directed the estates department to start toilet repairs on today.

The students had submitted their grievances in writing to the administration, but there was no response from the university’s top governing body, Eriya Byaruhanga, a first year student, said.

Meanwhile, there was heavy deployment of Anti-riot Police to contain the demonstration.
