Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) has pledged to construct public libraries in each of the five divisions of the city as part of ways to stimulate the culture of reading.

Speaking during the launch of city reading tent at Garden City on Thursday, Annie Galiwango said that the libraries will be accessed by both internal and external users.

"Now that there is scarcity of libraries in Kampala and unqualified librarians, and since our administration cares about orderliness, beauty and progress in education, I appeal to you leaders of city hall to implement the building activity and develop a culture of maintenance and keep it for the purpose it is meant to serve," she stated.

Hundreds of pupils from various schools in the city participate in reading activities at Garden City in Kampala, which include silent reading, read-aloud marathons, learning new words, debates, storytelling, molding, painting, drawing and other activities that encourage reading and promotion of creativity.

Local publishers also offered packages of interesting storybooks during the function as a special 20th anniversary gift to various city schools to aid school reading programmes
