One person has been confirmed dead and three admitted at Nakasero hospital after a fire at Bulange Mengo guard house.

Bulange Mengo is the administrative seat of Buganda Kingdom. The quarter guard is manned by UPDF soldiers and the Police.

The dead is a woman who had been detained for questioning by the guards.

Police say  items in the guard house included a jerry can containing petrol.

Police suspect that the woman described as mentally  ill  ignited the fire.

The same middle aged woman had on several occasions been at Bulange claiming that she had a message from the Buganda spirits.

The spirits she said  had to be appeased because they had been abandoned at some shrines in Masaka.

The Katikkiro of Buganda JB Walusimbi in a statement called for calm as the Police investigate the matter. He hailed the Police and all those who took part in putting out the fire.

Kampala Metropolitan Police chief, Andrew Felix Kawesi said, “It’s still early to confirm that a lunatic was behind the cause of the fire. As Police we shall investigate to ascertain the actual cause.”

Police have launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
