Revellers and the general public should spend the weekend well in the knowledge that Monday is not a public holiday as had earlier been widely anticipated.

With Uganda commemorating its independence golden jubilee on Tuesday, there was a sneaking feeling among the general public that government might declare its eve a public holiday.

However, according to Information Minister, Mary Karooro Okurut, “Monday will be a normal working day.” “The issue was mooted in a cabinet meeting, discussed and rejected,” Okurut has told New Vision by phone.

This means that the flurry of activities aimed at readying the country for the golden jubilee fete will not affect public offices as they will remain open on Monday.
