FLYWEIGHT boxer Rogers Semitala is to captain the Kampala City Council boxing team to the Inter-Cities boxing championship despite pending conflict in administration of the sport.
The 18-year-old COBAP BC boxer has led a seven-man squad in defense of the title that they won in Kampala last year, for the competition that gets underway in Nairobi on Thursday.
The Ugandan team that was seen off by Kampala Central Division mayor Godfrey Nyakana on Wednesday, faces a stiff challenge from other boxers from Mwanza, Dar es Salaam, Mauritius, Mombasa and hosts Nairobi.
The squad was picked from a national open trial held at East Coast club after National Council of Sports blocked the competition a fortnight ago pending resolution of the conflict in the sport.
Despite boxing being out of action for long due leadership wrangling in boxing body UABF, team coach Ronald Kalyango promised good results.
"My team is good. I am confident we shall bring back the trophy," vowed Kalyango before departure.
The team is sponsored by Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) and passenger transport firm Kampala Coach.
The KCCA team led by Roabam Ssebikejje has Umar Mutebi (l/fly), Semitala (fly), Emmanuel Nsubuga (bantam), Martin Okayi (l/welter), Sam Ntege (lightweight), Geoffrey Nyeko (middle) and Denis Mulindwa (l/heavyweight).
