SIXTEEN ministers and Members of Parliament from Busoga region have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni over delay by government to tarmac the 140-kilometre Musita-Namayingo-Lumino Road, which leads to neighbouring Kenya.
In a letter to the President, the legislators noted that the road was high on the agenda during the presidential and parliamentary campaigns of 2006 and 2011, but unfortunately it has not been included among those to be tarmacked in the 2012/2013 budget.
The team led by Bunya East MP, Waira Kyewalabye Majegere complained that the road has been at design stage since 2007. They observed that explanations by works ministry to the committee on physical infrastructure, to which some of them are members, do not indicate any immediate implementation.
"Your Excellence, as members who represent constituencies where this road passes we are encountering a lot of pressure from the expectant population of the area. This is negatively affecting our support as MPs and the NRM as a party," the MPs wrote on January 16, 2012.
They appealed to Museveni to intervene given the "economic and political importance of this road that passes through five districts to Kenya." The road passes through Mayuge, Iganga, Bugiri, Namayingo and Busia.
"It is a gateway to lake Victoria shores that produce fish for export and will save much on the tear and wear of Iganga-Bugiri-Busia road," they said.
Majegere added that as Busoga region they would mobilise to ensure that the coming budget is not passed until money is provided for that road.
The petitioners included Minister Rukia Nakadama (Mayuge), Mayende Dede (Bukooli south), Vincent Bagiire (Bunya west), Iddi Isabirye (Bunya south), Milton Muwuma (Kigulu south), Minister Kasule Lumumba (Bugiri), Minister Barbra Oundo (Busia), Olivia Kwagala (Iganga), Margaret Makhoha (Namayingo) and Peter Okeyoh (Bukooli Island), Baka Mugabi (Bukooli north) and Bernard Mulengani, member of the East African Legislative Assembly.
