Makerere University is to make internship a core course unit to address the problem of working experience always required by employers.
This was revealed by the deputy head of the College of Sciences,
Makerere University Dr. Sali Simba.
He said the move will make graduates more marketable as internship paper will be indicated in the transcript.
Many organisations have turned down graduates for employment due to lack of working experience.
“If we make internship a core course it will appear in the transcript as an audited paper. It will answer the question of working experience,” Simba told social science students and officials from the Uganda Non- Government Organisations Forum.
He said the heads of departments are to review all core units as quickly as possible.
Simba was addressing students during internship workshop in collaboration with Uganda National NGO Forum at the College of Social Sciences in
Makerere University on Friday.
The Forum sponsors eight students offering Masters of Social Sciences.
Simba advised students who pointed out that social science graduates don’t get employment easily to be assertive.
“You must have self initiatives what you can do yourself so that the organisation will be able to employ you,” he said
The chief executive officer of Uganda National NGO Forum Dr. Richard Ssewakiryanga advised students who are interested to work with NGOs to have functional approach.
“You must become proactive and have self initiatives in what you can do,” Ssewakiryanga said.
