In a recent interview with a fashion magazine, Hollywood actress Zoe Saldana confessed to wearing men’s underwear. Unconventional as it may sound, like Zoe, a number of women are opting for men’s underwear.
I too thought it was weird till a woman alighting a taxi, bent and her low slung pants revealed her boxer-line, much to the surprise of the male passengers.
A number of people would believe that women only tend to slip on a pair of boxers after a sleep over at a boyfriend’s house, but seemingly, a web of fashion is transcending gender.
Contrary to the notion that women’s underwear is supposed to set off body parts to flattering, exciting effect, women are opting for the comfort that boxers provide.
Underwear having a huge elastic strap with blazing red letters reading ‘Calvin Klein’ or ‘Tommy Hilfiger’, previously meant for men, are no longer restricted to them alone. Women too seem to have acquired a fascination to show off their beautiful labels to anyone who cares.
Besides, female clothes are more gender specific compared to men’s which give room for cross dressing. They are fitted and it’s fun to run around in them in the house without revealing too much.
Female wearers of briefs argue that boxers are comfy to chill out in at home and are a great substitute for pyjamas. “I wear them as night clothing because they are super comfortable,” admits Miriam Nabaggala (not real name).
Although Nabaggala does not wear boxers on a day-to-day basis, she defends women who do, saying:
“Fashion is all about expressing your personality and should not be confined by rules about gender.”
As women tend to move away from tight underwear, boxers work well for them. In the Western fashion world, in response to this demand, there is a new design of ladies briefs in pretty and flirty colours like white and pink.
They look like men’s underwear, but designed with a woman’s body in mind.
They are made from 100% cotton so they feel comfortable. Plus, you get the added benefit of knowing that since men love seeing their ladies lounge around the house in their clothes, this is a plus for the woman who is into menswear.
