Government is to release sh5bn for the teacher’s savings and cooperative society.

The teachers’ union will receive in total sh25b for its SACCO, Education minister Jessica Alupo has said.

The minister requested teachers not to engage in another strike, reassuring them that all their queries are being attended to.

Apart from plans to increase their salaries beginning July, the minister said teachers will have the promotions re-instated, construction of teachers’ houses maintained and timely release of capitation grants.

Maj. Alupo also pledged that Government would release its sh5bn for the teacher’s savings and cooperative society, and that science teachers will be remunerated.

She made the remarks on Monday, while addressing the press at the Media Centre in Kampala.

There were sections of teachers who were calling for a re-instatement of the national-wide teachers’ strike last week.

However, a survey today by ‘New Vision’ confirms it aborted. However, the head office of Uganda National Teachers’ Union distanced itself from the calls for a strike, saying it did not at any time call for a strike.

The teachers, towards the end of second term last year went on a sit-down strike, much as it was called off to allow negotiations with Government proceed. But after negotiations, as the new third term was about to start, they resumed the strike, saying they were not satisfied with the outcome.
