THE Ministry of Health has appealed to religious groups to counsel men to stop having extramarital sex to stem the raising rates of HIV infections.

The Uganda Aids Commission director general, Dr. Kihumuro Apuuli, said religious leaders can help curb the spread of HIV.

He made the appeal during the second Inter-Religious Council of the Uganda Consultative Assembly at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Tuesday.

The council, which also marked 10 years of existence, is comprised of the Church of Uganda, the Catholic Church and the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. Other members are Bahai Faith, Born Again Churches, the Orthodox Church, and the Seventh Day Adventists.

Doctors from the health ministry and the Uganda AIDS Commission also attended.

The doctors said Ugandans were not doing enough to stop the spread of the pandemic.

They blamed men’s philandering ways as one of the biggest drivers of the epidemic.
