Parents blamed for low turn up of pupils in Teso schools

Sep 19, 2017

Most schools’ attendance is between 20-100 pupils, yet they have an enrollment of more than 500 pupils.

Whereas pupils report early to school in other regions, Teso pupils have made it a habit to report late to school

Despite today being the second day of the term, primary schools in Teso sub-region have recorded poor turn up of pupils.

Stephen Asiata, the chairperson of Ngora's Headteachers Association, says reporting late has become almost tradition in most schools in Teso sub-region.

Speaking to New Vision, Asiata said whenever the term starts; parents are reluctant to send pupils to school on the first day.

He said it is unfortunate that most schools' attendance is between 20-100 pupils, yet they have a total enrollment of more than 500 pupils.

"That is why our pupils fail. If a P7 candidate reports after two weeks how do you expect them to excel" asked Asiata.

Clement Oyu, the headteacher of Vienna Vision School in Ngora district urged parents to always send pupils to school on the first day.

Oyu said teachers always use the first day to revise past papers and make corrections before they start new lessons.
