Uganda complying with UN resolutions on North Korea

The Government of Uganda is complying with UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea and has taken a number of measures to implement the resolutions, the foreign ministry has said.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the weekend, government said measures undertaken to implement the relevant UN resolutions include ceasing any dealings with a sanctioned entity, the Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation (KOMID).

"The Government of the Republic of Uganda, in compliance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions on the Peoples' Republic of Korea has decided to fully comply with UN resolutions," the statement read.

The Government's response follows a report by the UN indicating that Uganda was among several African countries being investigated by the UN for allegedly violating sanctions on North Korea.

It was alleged that North Koreans are still involved in training of the military and police forces in Uganda.

The report also called for investigation of the activities of a representative of the KOMID who allegedly traveled to Uganda from Syria.

In addition the panel also wants UN to into the role of the office of the military attaché at the North Korean Embassy in Kampala.

The foreign ministry statement indicated that Government will soon communicate all the measures it has taken to comply with the North Korea resolutions.

"The Government of Uganda will in due course inform the UN Security Council of the full range of measures it has undertaken in full compliance with UN resolutions," the statement read.

Under article 25 of the UN Charter, Uganda as a member of the United Nations is under obligation to carry out the decisions of the Security Council.

Early this month, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a number of new rounds of sanctions over North Korea's nuclear production and testing programme.
