The popular vegetable, is now a major source of income for many urban farmers.

Nakati is a major source of vitamin

Nakati (solanum Aethiopioum), which is enjoyed as a vegetable by most Ugandans has seen its price remain stable in most markets, which is a good deal for consumers.

While the price of almost every food item is on the rise in most markets, that of Nakati remains at sh500 a bundle (8-10 fingers) in Kalerwe, Kawempe, Nakasero, Owino and Kibuye markets.

The popular vegetable, which traditionally used to be grown in the backyard, mainly for domestic consumption is now a major source of income for many urban farmers.

To ensure a steady supply throughout the year, some farmers irrigate their Nakati crop.

Joseph Bukenya a vegetable farmer in Gombe, Wakiso says a number of agro-processors have also started packaging and exporting dried Nakati to Ugandans in the diaspora and the neighbouring countries.

Where irrigation is not possible, Nakati is usually grown in swampy areas. It is a popular vegetable in the central, southern and eastern regions of Uganda where it is enjoyed fried, steamed, dried and even eaten raw as salad.

Agnes Nambi, a dealer of vegetables at Kalerwe markets says sometimes, Nakati is consumed in a juice form by some health conscious people. Nakati contains nutrients like vitamins that are needed for a functional body system.

According to Bukenya when Nakati over grows, it producers seeds that farmers usually collect and use for replanting the next season.
