Will cyber school labs save our environment?

In a series of stories which started last month, Mwalimu has been exposing the risks and massive costs which underlie traditional school laboratories.

A sneak peek . . .

A big ray of light is projected on the wall. A student, with the guidance of a teacher, shows the rest of the class the results of chemical combinations. But different from the usual traditional laboratory, the practicals here are being handled using cyber technology-a computer, projector and software.

In a series of stories which started last month, Mwalimu has been exposing the risks and massive costs which underlie traditional school laboratories. But, as solution, the education ministry started cyber laboratories in schools since 2012.

Is the solution realistic? Is it worth the billions of shillings it cost? All this will be in New Vision (Mwalimu-Education pull out) on Wednesday.

Akwii helps refugee children to pay fees

IN 2012, Mary-Gorretti Akwii, the deputy headteacher for  Nakivale Secondary School in Isingiro district realised that many children in the refugee settlement in western Uganda, were not going to school, due to lack of fees and basic school requirements.

Akwii could not resist the bad feeling of seeing the future of the youths wasted. She devised self-help farming projects to keep children in school.
