Students call for more sensitization on HIV/AIDs

Secondary school students have called for more sensitisation for youth in schools on HIV/AIDs.

During a sensitization on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health organised by Global Health and HIV Aids initiative Uganda at Mbogo High Senior Secondary school, the students said they are not well conversant with some of the issues concerning HIV/AIDS. They called for regular interaction with external counselors as a way to fighting the scourge among the adolescents.

"For instance I did not know how HIV/AIDs came into existence. It's after this sensitization that I have learnt a lot. We need such programmes twice a term such that we know how to guard ourselves," said Shifah Nakiyima a S.5 student.

Swabra Nakitandwe another student said, "HIV/AIDs sessions by external counselors are very interesting because they are presented with real life examples compared to what we grasp during class lessons."

The school's senior woman teacher Jalilah Namayaza said they occasionally carry out such trainings, but that external counselors have more examples and experiences on HIV/AIDS which is the main reason they keep on engaging them. The school's Deputy Teacher Zainab Maka said such sessions harmonize students for a common fight against HIV/AIDS.
