Police in Entebbe are on a hunt for armed assailants who raided a supermarket in Katabi town council, Wakiso district and shot a security guard and a cashier, before making off with an unspecified amount of money.

This happened at 3.30am local time Thursday at Coinworth Supermarket at Broadway (Kitala), along the Kampala-Entebbe highway.

A supermarket staff who did not want to be named said the armed robbers stormed the supermarket and shot security guard John Omara three times in the stomach.

There was another guard at the time, who reportedly dashed for cover during the raid.

"The other security guard who was also guarding the supermarket premises took off and hid as soon as the armed robbers opened fire," said the source.

The assailants also shot the cashier on duty Barbara Tusiime in the leg, before running off with money they had collected from the cash register.

The two victims were moments later rushed to Doctor's Clinic in Sseguku, also along Entebbe road, and later transfered to Mulago Referral Hospital in Kampala. They are still undergoing medical treatment.

Meanwhile, police recovered six AK-47 bullet cartridges at the scene that will be used in investigations.

Kampala Metropolitan South regional police commander ACP Siraje Bakaleke (pictured above) confirmed the incident and said the armed robbers first did some shopping at the supermarket before they returned for the attack.

"Good enough we've got CCTV footage that will help in our investigations," he said.

Sources privy to the operation of the supermarket revealed that the incident happened only days after they had just started operating on a 24-hour basis.

“This is the second time Coinworth Supermarket is being robbed in a similar manner. They were first robbed from Kitende along Entebbe road," a source said.
