Chess leagues merged

No team will be relegated.

Teams will be fighting to make it to the finalists' bracket this season, when the National chess league begins on June 25,

This follows the Uganda Chess Federation's decision to "spice up"  the league, merging the two divisions (divisions one and two).

No team will be relegated.

"The change in the league has definitely got us thinking. We need to double our efforts if we are to yield positive results this season.  And it is for this reason that we have encouraged our players to take on serious training ahead of the league," said Kireka club's team captain Ivan Kaddu.

According to the general secretary, Henry Ategeka, the federation decided to make the league much more competitive than before by creating fair comepetition among teams.

"We realized that there are teams in the lower division that can compete fairly with those in the top flight. So to make the competition fair, we saw it fit to combine the leagues," said Ategeka

"Right now we are rallying clubs to join the league with registered profiles and we are doing good so far."

In a meeting held Thursday by the federation leaders, it was also agreed that the league be rated using the Swiss system.

"The technical team has assured me it will be very possible with the Swiss system because it is what we used in the Zonal and Easter tournaments," Ategeka said.

Clubs are required to register before June, 18 for the league. The clubs are; Mengo Chess Club, Bunamwaya, Enkabi, Mulago Rooks, Mulago Knights, Dmark, Chess Life Academy, Crestals, Bank of Uganda, Boons and Comrades Chess Club are the only  clubs that have handed in their players' profiles so far.
