Archbishop Lwanga mourns Papal Knight Kalungi

“He was a true Christian who was devoted to the church activities despite his old age. He has been a man of great wisdom; who the young people loved to be with,” Lwanga said.

The archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has described the fallen John Pool Kalungi as a true faithful, who loved his church until death.

"He was a true Christian who was devoted to the church activities despite his old age. He has been a man of great wisdom; who the young people loved to be with," Lwanga said.

Lwanga made the remarks on Monday at a requiem mass held at Sacred Heart of Mary Cathedral Lubaga. John Pool Kalungi, 90, succumbed to kidney failure and cancer on Friday at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

The archbishop Lwanga was assisted by Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, vicar general, Msgr Charles Kasibante, Fr Dr Joseph Ssebunnya, and several priests from different parishes.

The archbishop Lwanga asked mourners to emulate the late John Pool who lived an exemplary life in his service to God and the church.

The prelate described him as a person who has been hardworking, trustworthy, caring, humble and respectful. 

Kalungi who was a resident of Lungujja was knighted by the Pope Benedict XVI in October 2012.  He will be remembered for donating four acres of land to Kitagobwa Catholic church.  

Cathedral administer, Fr Joseph Mary Bbuye hailed John Pool for the tremendous work he did for the country and the church.

Carol Pool hailed her late husband, for adhering to his marriage vows till he died. "Let me pray for his soul, I know we will meet again," she added.

 
He was born to George William Pool and Lucia Nanfuka on January, 5, 1927, in Nsambya Parish, baptized the same year at Lubaga and also confirmed as Catholic at the same Church.

He studied at Kisubi Junior Boarding School and Gayaza Primary School, St Peter's Nsambya Junior School, Namiryango College, Nakawa Business Institute and Nakawa Management. 

He served the church in different categories as head of Laity Katadde Sub-Parish in Gayaza Parish, Treasurer Gayaza Parish for 15 years, Head of Laity Gayaza Parish.

He will be laid to rest on Tuesday May 23 at his ancestral home at Kiti-Kitagobwa in Wakiso district.
