Asaba wins Mayombo memorial golf open

Runner up and defending champion Ronald Rugumayo who won with 67 gross last year, was this time four strokes off

National junior golf team captain Denis Asaba 'Diamond' shot a six-under-par 64 gross to win the 10th edition of the Mayombo open at Toro club on Saturday.

Playing off scratch, the 18 year old Toro Club golfer, who is fresh from representing Uganda in the Zone V Africa Championships in Zambia, hit six birdies and 12 pars in one his best performances since starting out in 2012.

He consequently won his first tournament at Toro club, relagating last year's winner Ronald Rugumayo to second place.

"This was my best round ever with six birdies and 12 pars. I followed my mentor Stephen Kasaija's advice of making it simple, so I played a regulation game and kept it safe," Asaba said.

"I also thank my sponsors here at the club for always supporting me, and my playing partners Joseph Cwi-nyai and Michael Alunga for giving me good company," Asaba stated.

Runner up and defending champion Ronald Rugumayo who won with 67 gross last year, was this time four strokes off, and finished cursing the afternoon rain that messed up his putting.

"After the rain, I could no longer get straight puts because the running water had messed up the greens," Rugumayo noted.

Andrew Mugume, Kilembe golf club youngster Amon Bwambale and William Otemba were the top players in the men's Groups A-C, where Sam Kacungira, Bernard Baguma and Victor Kalenzi where runner up respectively.

Mbarara's Edrae Kagombe and Toro's Peace Kabasweka where the top players in the ladies Group A while Mariam Kluge and Phillo Kalenzi were the best in Group B.

Brothers to the late Noble Mayombo; Dan Rabwoni, David Olimi and Major Okwi Rabwoni graced the prize ceremony and contributed sh1m to next year's tournament.

Okwi advised the golfer to uphold the principles that the late Noble always championed and always to remain united.

"Mayombo was a holistic individual; he was not only political but cultural. Continue playing Golf for community and unity. A sport that encourages participation and more than competition is a noble sport," Okwi stated, before asking the golfers to encourage the youngsters to take on the sport that encourages discipline.
