40 suspected criminals netted in Iganga operation

Police in Iganga has rounded up 40 suspected hard core criminals believed to be part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents. 

The 40 who include a Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) deserter were rounded up by Police in a surprise operation conducted in Nakavule and Busei villages in the early hours of Thursday morning. 

Some of those arrested were identified as Sayid Magoola, Richard Kisambira, Musa Lule, Ivan Kyowa, Godfrey Kaloogo,Michael Dhafa, Wilson Maganda, Ibrahim Kawanguzi, Patrick Waida, Banuri Lubega and Nubuwat Mutesi. 

Police fired in the air several times after a group of youths protested the arrest of the suspects by pelting stones at Police claiming they were innocent. 

Police spokesman for Busoga East, James Mubi, said 79kg of marijuana, iron bars and several metallic objects suspected to be used by the suspects to terrorize residents were discovered in possession of the suspects. 

Mubi said similar operations are to be conducted throughout the entire district ensure all wrong elements are wiped out.

He said the operation was conducted after receiving numerous complaints of increased cases of crime. 

The District Police Commander Iganga, Nassibu Nditta, urged members of the public to always volunteer information about suspicious wrong elements in society as a way of reducing on cases of crime.
