UMI introduces new courses in Education and Health

Nkata said UMI won the commendations for being the best Certified Institute of Marketing (CIM) Centre globally.

In a bid to move with the changing world, Uganda Management Institute (UMI) has introduced two new courses.

According to the institute, the courses are intended to strengthen the higher education sub sector and the health sector. They are purposely for Universities and tertiary institutional leaders.

Speaking at the 15 graduation ceremony, UMI Director General, James Nkata said the courses include a Postgraduate diploma in Higher Education Leadership and Management.

Nkata noted that the product was designed to solve the endemic problems in the education sector.

"This fine product was developed in a collaborative effort between two universities in Finland, Makerere University and Ministry of Education," he said.

It comes at the time when public universities, in the country including Makerere are engulfed in endless leadership wrangles. Nkata said the second product is the Postgraduate diploma in Hospital and Healthcare Management.

New Vision learnt that both programs are offered under the School of Civil Service Public Administration and Governance.

Uganda is also struggling with management issues in government hospitals.

Nkata also revealed that the School is in talks with the Presidential advisor on public services on how to strengthen performance management and monitoring of the public sector.

The graduation ceremony was graced by Mrs. Janet Museveni as the chief guest. It was her first time to grace a graduation at UMI since she became education minister last year. Nkata congratulated Mrs. Museveni for the appointment and promised to support her.  

He also unveiled a number of other achievements; the institute has registered in one year including winning eight internationally acclaimed commendations.

Nkata said UMI won the commendations for being the best Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Centre globally.

"Following on that success story, we have finalised arrangements with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in which we shall be an examination centre in the whole of East African Region," Nkata said.

He also revealed that the Institute had patterned with the Institute of Chartered Public Accounts of Uganda (ICPAU) to train officials from both the private and the public sector to the level of Chartered Public Accountants (CPAU).

Nkata added that UMI was partnering with the Office of the Prime Minister that will enable the institute to play a major role in building capacity for monitoring and evaluating government programs.

In her speech Mrs. Museveni criticized the rampant abuse of public office by managers and asked UMI alumni to spearhead the campaign against corruption.
