Kiwanuka, Mukasa fancying their chances in Singleton challenge

Apr 11, 2017

The pair had before the weekend action, not played any match

There was no sign of rust for the pair of Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Elly Mukasa as the Singleton Golf Challenge four-ball-better-ball format of play competition entered the penultimate stage at Entebbe Club over the weekend.

The pair had before the weekend action, not played any match, instead earning walkovers up to the quarter finals stage where they registered a big 4&2 win over Ray Kahigi and Ibrahim Bagalana.

They will now continue to fancy their chances against Dan Kajungu/Collins Nuwagira who beat Moses Ssebugwawo/Emmanuel Mugabi with a similar score.

"We made it look easy but we were just simply very well mentally prepared.

Allan Muhereza was eliminated by the pair of Isaac Mariera/John Muchiri

Obviously the walkovers disadvantaged us since we did not get to have a chance to compete before so it was not an easy win. Golf is not an easy game," Kiwanuka said.

He now believes they can even do better and no one will stop their resolve to win the tournament whose ultimate prize is a fully paid trip to the 146th British Open in Scotland.

"We have been prepared from the very beginning to play anyone who was brought along. We have fancied our chances in this tournament and we are going to do our best to win it; we think we can beat anyone," Kiwanuka stated.

In other games the more fancied pair of Allan Muhereza/Moses Matsiko was beaten by Isaac Mariera/John Muchiri, 3&2 while the pair of Jadu Patel /Anthony Agaba continued their match, winning against Enock Nuwagaba/Paul Nsereko 3&2.

The first of its kind, the Singleton challenge has been held in a series of tournaments with 124 players playing on a knock-out basis since January and advancing in every round.
