Coach Amos Kamya believes his experienced players will lift the team

Qualifying for the Toyota World Junior Golf Championships in Japan is on top of the agenda as Uganda Junior golfers compete in the Africa Junior Golf Championship at the Royal Harare Golf Club on Tuesday.

The four-man Ugandan team led by UGU's official in charge of competitions Sam Kacungira and Coach Amos Kamya jetted in Zimbabwe on Sunday ready for the challenge.

The team was flagged off in Kampala by UGU vice president Innocent Kihika after a luncheon at Pyramids Casino on Friday.

The team is comprised of Denis Asaba from Toro Club, Joel Basalaine (Mehta Golf Club), Herman Mutebi (Entebbe Club) and David Kamulindwa (Toro).

Mutebi is the most experienced of all having represented Uganda at this level in the 2015 and 2016 editions in Zambia and Tunisia where Asaba and Basalaine made their debuts.

Kamulindwa is the rookie on the Royal and Ancient sponsored team that finished 7th out of nine in Tunisia last year.

Coach Amos Kamya believes his experienced players will lift the team in their pursuit of one of two slots for African teams for the Japan event.

"We have a new approach to match play and I'm banking on their experience, but discipline is important as they have to regulate their shots and then score," Kamya said before the team left.

Just like Kamya UGU Junior Development Manager Oscar Semawere expects the experienced members to lift the team.

The inaugural Africa Junior Championship was won by Zimbabwe in 1995. South Africa then won the tournament in 1996 and 1997, before Zimbabwe again won in 1998. Since then South Africa has dominated the event and are defending champions going into this year's tournament.

Uganda will battle golfers from South Africa, Morocco, Namibia, Kenya, Tunisia, Reunion Islands, Mauritius, Zambia, Botswana, and Malawi.
