Independent candidate Joseph Ochieng has been announced the guild president-elect for Kyambogo University for the year 2017-2018.

This was after the guild elections that took place on Tuesday. He floored seven other candidates who were in the race, including Patricia Kishemeire, Micheal Ashaba and Sarah Kansiime. Ochieng replaces Lawrence Lugaravu (FDC), who has been the guild president since 2016.

According to the university electoral commission chairman, Joseph Ssempagala, Ochieng obtained 4,858 votes followed by Micheal Ashaba, who got 2,109 votes and Patricia Kishemeire emerged the third with 1,314 votes.

Ssempagala said the election was free and fair and the losers conceded. He said unlike the 2016 elections, more students participated in the Tuesday's elections. "About 10,000 students voted unlike the 2016 where only 7,000 students voted," he said.

He added: "Swearing will take place on Friday and next week, elected leaders will occupy their respective offices," he said.

Dennis Odong, in an interview with New Vision conceded defeat and urged his supporters to cooperate with Ochieng for the betterment of Kyambogo.

He said failure to win the guild election is not the end of life thus appealed to his fellow losers to concentrate on books for their future.

"Let's go back and concentrate in books because this is not the end," he said.

Daphine Nayiga, a procurement student told New Vision that the election went on well without any violence. She said she had predicted that Ochieng would win the race because of his fame among university students.
