Katunguka set to be appointed Kyambogo Vice Chancellor

He has been acting as the institution's Vice Chancellor since 2014

The Kyambogo University Council on Tuesday agreed to forward Prof Eli Katunguka's name to the University Chancellor as the institution's next Vice Chancellor.

Katunguka has been acting the acting Vice Chancellor in the position since 2014.

In a meeting that took place at the Council's boardroom chaired by Prof John Okedi, Katunguka's name was submitted for appointment.

A source that spoke to New Vision on condition of anonymity said Katunguka emerged the best candidate for the job after scoring 81% in the interviews that took place last week.

His other rivals Prof Geoffrey Bakunda the deputy principal Makerere University Business School and Prof Aaron Wanyama, the former dean of the Faculty of Science at Kyambogo scored 67% and 61% respectively, the source added.

According to the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001, the Vice Chancellor is appointed by the Chancellor on the recommendation of the University Council from among three candidates recommended by the Senate.

"Prof Katunguka was the best and it was difficult for anyone to raise any issue against him" the source said.

Following the suspension of Prof Isaiah Omolo Ndiege and Prof Fabian Nabugomu in 2012, efforts to install a substantive Vice Chancellor for the second largest public University in Uganda in the recent past have been futile due to many irregularities.

Katunguka has been acting as the institution's Vice Chancellor since 2014 and before that; Prof. John Opuda-Asibo served in the same capacity though for a short spell.
