250 swimmers for junior championships

In order to bridge the competition gap that Ugandan junior swimmers below the age of 12 miss, the Dolphins Swimming Club will on April 1-2 host the first ever Junior Swimming Championship in Uganda  at Gems Cambridge School.

Over 15 home and foreign clubs from Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania are expected to send swimmers for the two-day championship.

According to Dolphins Club Chairman Sam Ntulume the need to tap talent at an early age is one of the reasons they are organising this event in order to be assured of a brighter future.

"We saw a gap in the events that we hold in the country with respect to children who are 12 years and under. We don't have any competition in the country that addresses that age group so we thought we could come in as a club to support the federation to organise this event in order to boost the sport," he said.

"We have invited a number of clubs within the country and region and many of them have expressed interest in participating in this event.

"Organising this event is not easy, so there are a number of logistics we need to put in place so we would like to thank DStv for promising to walk with us in this event."

He thanked other corporate companies that several other individuals for having sponsored their earlier events.

"We call on more companies to join us to ensure that we make this event a success for the good of the sport and image of the country,"
