African security committee on borders visits Kisoro

According to the Kisoro district Resident District Commissioner Shafiq Sekandi, the security committee wanted to verify the reports from Democratic Republic of Congo that M23 combatants were using Kisoro as a gate way to eastern parts of Congo.

African joint military security committee responsible for border security visited Kisoro district on Saturday.

 

The committee comprised of senior military officers from various countries on African continent including Mozambique, Angola, Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Africa, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Gambia and Uganda.

 

According to the Kisoro district Resident District Commissioner Shafiq Sekandi, the security committee wanted to verify the reports from Democratic Republic of Congo that M23 combatants were using Kisoro as a gate way to eastern parts of Congo.

 

They also wanted to confirm the last month's interception of guns in the district that were reportedly headed over to DR.Congo.

The military officials visited Kisoro central police station and talked to some of the M23 jailed combatants.

 

Sekandi also said the senior military officials wanted to know the reasons behind the continuous escape of the M23 rebels from Bihanga barracks and forge a way forward to long term solutions to the problems they are facing.

 

The senior military officials recently visited Bihanga in Mbarara where the biggest number of M23 rebels live and while at Bihanga the rebels expressed their desire to go back home.

 

However, while at Kisoro three of the seven rebels were taken by the committee for interrogation.
