The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has called on the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) to review its objectives.

The party claims the concept seems to be only benefiting the top political class which makes it irrelevant to the common person in the five nations.

The party's deputy secretary general, Harold Kaija said: "We have no set standards that unite us together as a region apart from Lake Victoria and may be the land where we belong. But the common man does not benefit anything," he said.

Adding: "Right now the EAC is like a car which hasn't been taken for wheel aligning. There is nothing that binds us together like on governance issues, economy and human rights among others."

Kaija said the new EALA should make sure that it benefits the local person in the five countries.

EAC is made of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

On the slated celebration of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) day, Kaija said government needs to reflect on its achievements in the last 31 years they have been in power.

"For 31 years, we are still struggling with the poor health facilities, poor education, land issues and human rights violations among others. They should use this day to see if they are still on track," he said.

NRM is to celebrate NRM day since it took over power on January 26, 1986.

FDC also announced its plans to elect a new party president. Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu has been leading the party since November 22, 2012. However, the party says Muntu can still stand for the post for his second term if he so wishes.

A total of 21 party members have also picked forms for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) slot. Nomination of candidates is to take place on January 24th and 25th.
