Local chess body elects new leadership

Outgoing general secretary Christopher Turyahabwe will give a shot at the vice-presidency.

KAMPALA - Vianney Luggya is wrapping up his term of office as president of the Uganda Chess Federation.

A new leadership that is set to steer its operations for the next four years will be elected by representatives of the different chess clubs today in an annual general assembly at Lugogo.

Though some of the outgoing leaders chose not to stand again, there are at least two former board members who have decided not to bow out completely as they wish to serve the chess fraternity for the next four years.

Outgoing general secretary Christopher Turyahabwe will give a shot at the vice-presidency.

Olga Namwanjje, the departing vice president and the only female on the board, will be contesting for Director of development on the new cabinet.

It is however a topic of discussion as to whether the chess fraternity is excited over the news that some of these contenders seek another term to serve the federation, considering that some of them were received with mixed reactions.

Their reappointment is therefore dependent on whether the voters are convinced that their performance in the previous executive warrants an additional term.

Submissions on nominees for other posts include Emmanuel Mwaka, who is competing with Stephen Kisuze  for the position of federation president UCF.

Isaac Otim will be out to compete with Turyahabwe for the post of vice president.

Forbisha Katula and Henry Ategeka will also be standing for general secretary while Isaac Munanira and Augustine Buwuule will be viefor treasurer and publicity respectively.

Whereas some of the candidates will be keeping their fingers crossed to go through the poles, a few of them will have a smooth landing to the new executive as they will be standing as sole candidates.
