The visual art calendar started off on a rather intriguing note. Constructs, an exhibition viewing at the Afriart gallery in Kamwokya, not only present eye-catching aesthetics but also tickle your mind to question your view on certain things of the world.
In this solo exhibition, viewing from January 13 to February 03, Ronex Ahimbisibwe, one of Uganda's most respected abstract visual artists, showcases his power of create worlds, as seen in artworks ranging from paintings, sculptures, photography and woodcut prints.
In a collection of 30 works, Ahimbisibwe immerses the viewer into his imagination through different unique themes and concepts.
Ahimbisibwe is open-minded. He refuses to limit himself to a particular concept, theme or material. But rather decides to showcase the struggles artists go through in bid to present good work.
He experiments with a wide variety of techniques and materials, while attempting to answer questions about methods and materials and the effects of texture on one's perception.
Constructs—the title of this show—he says is derived from his electric art style and the search for commonalities in his works.
"My work is a revelation of my world, the way I see life, what surrounds me, my culture, my conscious, and the magic of the unconscious. I believe the power of an artist lies in creating and nothing more," he says.
In one piece, A World Through My Window, for instance, the artist, using acrylics on canvass, paints coloured irregular shapes to depict his view of the world, where without one's focus nothing will make sense.
The viewers also have chance to marvel at other works of permanent collection at the gallery.
