Residents said they need to be listened to because they have their rights and may frustrate the project

Wakiso district chairman Matia Lwanga Bwanika has called upon the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to exhibit transparency in the compensation of the people affected by the Wankulukuku road construction project.

Lwanga made the remarks while speaking to the Bunamwaya residents during the consultative meeting in which the residents were asked to give part of their land to the project without any compensation. The meeting took place on Monday at Baguma gardens.

Lwanga's remarks followed a protest by some individuals who said that they need compensation for their land and property before the project kicks off because they will have nowhere to go because the road project is going to affect them severely.

The road stretches from Kabuusu to Lweza on Entebbe Road and has 10 kilometres and construction work is to consume sh36b. The project is likely to start in December this year.

Some residents including John Matovu Emmanuel Kiwanuka, Ousman Mugwanya and Francis Sserunkuuma said they are not ready to give out their land for free.

Lwanga promised to meet the residents who want compensation saying that they need to be listened to because they have their rights and may frustrate the project.

"If KCCA says that there is no money to compensate the affected people then it must be that and I do not want to hear that some tax payers' money again has been used to pay some few individuals. I want transparency in this project" said Bwanika.

Former Buganda prime minister Eng. JB Walusimbi who is also a resident of Bunamwaya attended the consultative meeting and called upon the residents to embrace the project saying they have suffered from the effects of the poor road for so long.

Walusimbi promised to monitor the road works to ensure that quality work is done saying that he has the capacity since himself is an engineer with a lot of experience.

The Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality MP Emmanuel Ssempala appealed to the residents to quickly embrace the project.

Eng. David Rogers Semugooma from KCCA directorate of engineering and technical services later said he is hopeful the project will kick off since Bunamwaya residents have embraced it.
