Fans roast Obua for 'un-Ugandan' comments on Cranes

"The structure was not there. I'll be honest with you. They (Uganda Cranes) were playing street football," Obua said

Former Cranes striker David Obua has tasted the wrath of Ugandans after his comments about Uganda soccer team's performance in Gabon last night rubbed fans the wrong way.

The former midfielder for Scottish Premier League club, Hearts, who also played for a number of other clubs including Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa), Wilmington Hammerheads (US)  and Express (Uganda) is currently one of the commentators analysing the African Nations Cup (AFCON) with South African sports broadcaster Supersport.

Analyzing yesterday's match between Ghana and Uganda, Obua indicated he was less than impressed with the Cranes' performance.

"The structure was not there. I'll be honest with you. They (Uganda Cranes) were playing street football," he said when asked about his opinion on yesterday's game by the match day moderator Robert Marawa.

But this, it seems has not gone down well with the fans and they have spared no time in launching a vitriolic tirade against the former Ugandan international.

Using Facebook, one of the fans said rather than criticize; Obua should instead be full of praise for the national team. The fan going by the name Anold Eric said by merely qualifying for Gabon, the Cranes had accomplished a feat he (Obua) and others of his time had failed for donkey years.

"Our goal [as Uganda Cranes] was achieved when we qualified. Besides, the boys had a wonderful second half. Ibra Sekajja (Cranes' former captain) can say something but Obua was a pure flop," he said of the controversial son of the former Federation of Uganda Football Association boss, Denis Obua.

"We remember him more for his misconduct than football for the national team."

Another fan wondered: "What did he achieve in his entire career apart from spending most of his time in the salon?"

Others, however, others said Cranes' performance merited Obua's response because some of Cranes' players had not played well enough to make Uganda proud.

Uganda came short yesterday in the match against Ghana, losing one goal to nil in Gabon.

Cranes' next match is on Saturday in a must-win game against Egypt, who have won the AFCON cup seven times. After Saturday's game, Uganda will then face Mali in the final group game.
