Four charged with Maj. Kiggundu murder

The former acting Tabliq leader, Yahaya Ramadhan Mwanje and three others have been charged with the murder of Sheikh Maj. Muhammad Kiggundu and his body guard.

Mwanje, 50, and his co-accused were arraigned before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Jameson Karemani Friday afternoon.

However, they were not allowed to plead to the charges because their case is only tried by the High Court.

Prosecution led by Emilly Nisiima alleges that Muhammad Buyondo, 43, Abdu Wahab Ssendegeya, 37, and Musa Ssekandi 42, on November 26, 2016 at Masanafu trading centre, Rubaga Divison in the Kampala murdered Maj. Kiggundu.

It further alleges that on the same day and place, they also murdered Kiggundu's body guard Sgt. Steven Mukasa.

Meanwhile, the accused's lawyers led by Fred Muwema have asked court to issue criminal summons against Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Wilson Omondig, the commandant of Nalufenya Police Station over prolonged detention.

"Your worship, on behalf of the accused under section 42 of the Magistrates' Court Act (MCA), I would like to make a complaint against Omoding over the prolonged detention of accused without trial," Muwema said.

He said  Article 23(4) of the MCA provides that any person who is arrested must be produced in court within 48hours but Mwanje was arrested on November 27, 2016, Ssendegeya and Buyondo on December, 5, 2016 and Ssekandi on December, 26, 2016, and were produced in court beyond 48 hours," Muwema told court.
