Jinja RDC asks families to unite against poverty

“We advise families to cooperate and work together by cultivating gardens to fight poverty."

Jinja Resident District Commissioner Rex Achila has asked families to unite and work together to overcome the poverty levels caused by drought in the district.

He said families particularly in the worst-hit areas should work extra hard to overcome the situation.

Buyengo, Bassude and Batagaya, which are largely sugarcane growing areas, are among the most affected areas.

"We advise families to cooperate and work together by cultivating gardens to fight the rising poverty," said the RDC.

Achila also advised men not to marry "many wives" and instead concentrate on one family to have better food consumption.

He was speaking an annual Jinja Municipality Mayor's Ball on Saturday at the Mayor's Gardens.

At the event, Mayor Majidu Batambuze promised to revive the municipality's lost glory that includes industries, a good road network and street lighting, as well as proper garbage collection and disposal.

He said that by the time he came into office, the budget wasn't pro-people and couldn't support the developments.

"I need more time and support from the communities and the technical people to ensure the budget is consolidated to support the revival of the mentioned aspects. Many industries are down while the town is so dark with dusty roads."

Jinja municipality current operates on an annual budget of sh23b.

Batambuze said that as a council, they have planned for solar lighting which is cheaper because currently UMEME is demanding over sh1b in arrears.

He urged good working relations and called on both the technical team and the communities to avoid politicizing work and instead be cooperative.

"The municipality should stop worrying about the high tariffs from UMEME because the central government will be clearing the bills to ensure all municipalities are well lit," RDC Achila later said.
