'Makerere should not witness any more strike'

In his Christmas sermon, Bishop Erwau says religious leaders need to pray to God to end the spirit of strikes that has paralyzed the public institution.

The Anglican bishop of Soroti dioceses George William Erwau (pictured) has dedicated this year's Christmas Day prayers to Makerere University: that it should not witness any more strikes.

Uganda's top institution of higher education has reopened - as announced by the University Council on Saturday - after nearly two months of closure due to a lecturers' strike.

The council chairperson Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem told reporters that the university had reopened "with immediate effect" and that students would return to carry on with the first semester on January 2, 2017.

On Sunday, Bishop Erwau talked of the need for "qualified men and women" for Uganda's future leadership.

"I pray today that no more strikes shall occur in Makerere University so that our country gets qualified men and women to lead this nation in future."

He was delivering his Christmas sermon to a fully-packed St-Peters Cathedral in Soroti town.

He said it is high time all religious leaders prayed to God to end the spirit of strikes that has paralyzed the public institution.

Calling for need for people to embrace education, Bishop Erwau said people should not waste resources they have for celebrating one day - Christmas Day -  yet the schools are about to open.

"If you drink, please don't drive because when you are drunk and behind the wheel, you will shorten your life in an accident and yet your family needs you," he urged.

The clergyman also prayed for peace, prosperity and unity among Ugandans and wished them a merry Christmas full of God's Grace.

Notable among the congregation was Serere women MP Hellen Adoa Abeku who urged people against engaging in quarrels that lead to fights this festive season.

Adoa says police always records many cases of fights, an issue she says should be avoided because "we are celebrating the birth of the Saviour".

She urged the people in Teso to commit to God to enable them overcome challenges ahead of them.
