MPs end year in style, they will not be taxed

They have really worked hard this. Haven't they? Ugandan legislators on Wednesday crowned 2016 with dinner dance. The function was held at Parliament gardens in Kampala.

Vice President Edward Ssekandi, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakan Rugunda and ministers attended.

Did they have a reason to celebrate? Absolutely yes, they did. The dinner dance coincided with some good news that the President had signed the Income Tax Amendment Bill 2016 which exempts MPs' from being taxed.

Despite pressure from the civil society, President Yoweri Museveni on November 19 assented to the Bill making it law. MPs argued that their salaries were being taxed, thus no need to tax their allowances.

The exemption of MPs' allowances from taxation will lead to loss of sh45b revenue collection.
