Police hailed over operation 'fika salama'

Local leaders and residents in Eastern region of Uganda have hailed the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura and entire Police force for launching ‘Fika Salama' operation that has seen fatal accidents reduce on highway roads during the festive season.

Residents and travelers from Kampala and other parts of the country who talked to the New Vision at a road block between Kamonkoli and Mbale praised police for the initiative.

Travelers heading to different parts of the country said that because of very many police checkups along Mbale-Tirinyi highway, Mbale-Soroti, drivers have been forced drivers to be cautious.

 "I want to thank police for the initiative. This operation has seen reckless drivers on our roads get disciplined," Budaka woman Member of Parliament Pamela Kamugo said.

"We have had of less minor accidents on highways during this Christmas festive compared to the past years," Kamugo added.

She said that police decision to deploy officers on the boarders of each districts along the highway has improved the discipline among drivers, reduced drink driving and quack drivers.
