The Katakwi school without a science teacher

Dec 02, 2016

Two volunteer teachers have stepped in to help candidates.

Oriau Primary School, found in the Magoro sub-county of Katakwi district, has had no Science teacher for the last three years, it has been revealed.

Charles Edangat, who is the chairperson of the school's Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), told New Vision that they have reporting the issue to the district but nothing has been done about it.

The school has never registered a Division 1 in PLE since 2005, he added.

"We have few teachers and that is why our pupils don't pass PLE. Governments should help us to help our children to achieve quality education" urged Edangat.

Meanwhile, the school's headteacher John Bosco Okiror said they have an enrolment of 643 pupils that are controlled by only eight teachers - including him.

And he blamed the school's failure to perform well on the very low teacher to pupil ratio.

"Science is the biggest problem I have registered in my school. It's true we don't have a science teacher, something that affects the performance of P.7 candidates" said Okiror.

He said two volunteer teachers stepped in to assist the P7 candidates who have sat this year's final national exams.

Okiror called upon Katakwi district to put his school into consideration when time of recruitment comes if his school is to produce better Ugandans.
